Full Press Release (300 words)

The International SpaceWire Conference aims to bring together SpaceWire product designers, hardware engineers, software engineers, system developers and mission specialists interested in and working with SpaceWire to share the latest ideas and developments related to SpaceWire technology.

SpaceWire is a leading data-handling network for use onboard spacecraft. It is simple to implement and use, a feature which has drawn increasing attention to it in recent years. SpaceWire is being deployed on many space missions by organisations such as the European Space Agency (ESA), the USA’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Japanese Space Agency (JAXA). These include scientific missions to other planets in our solar system such as ESA’s mission to Mars in 2013 (ExoMars), the joint ESA-JAXA mission to Mercury (BepiColumbo) scheduled for launch the same year, and NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter which heads for the moon next year. SpaceWire is also being used on many earth orbiting spacecraft such as NASA’s next generation meteorological satellites (GOES-R), JAXA’s X-ray astronomy telescope (NeXT), and NASA’s SWIFT mission which has been in orbit studying gamma-ray bursts since 2004. The James Webb Space Telescope (being developed by NASA and ESA) also uses SpaceWire.

This conference is targeted at the whole SpaceWire community including both academics and industrialists and will be attended by representatives from industry and the major space agencies. It is being hosted in Dundee, Scotland from 17th-19th September 2007 by the University of Dundee, where the SpaceWire standard was written.

Session topics will include SpaceWire missions and applications, components, onboard equipment and software, test and verification, networks and protocols and standardisation. There will also be an industrial exhibition featuring major international suppliers of SpaceWire technology.

Further information about the conference is available on the web at www.spacewire.computing.dundee.ac.uk.

Information about SpaceWire is available from the SpaceWire website at www.spacewire.esa.int.
